I got this radio a couple of years back because I like the style and sound quality. The stamp on the driver shows October 31, 1966 so the radio is almost 47 years old. Condition of the radio wasn’t very good but a little bit of elbow grease, new capacitors and Simple Green improved the look and sound a lot.
Inside the box, there is a fiber-glass pillow that’s supposed to improve the sound. Well, it actually does. Without the pillow the sound has an echo and definitely feels like it is coming from an empty box. The fabric which covers front of the radio is glued to the front panel. Little bit of alcohol together with the age allowed me to peel it right off. The material is some sort of plastic or vinyl so I was able to clean it with Simple Green. When it was all dry I have glued it with 3M 90 glue.
I have also took time to recap the radio. One thing I forgot to check was how off specs were the almost 50 years old capacitors. I guess I will never know unless I get another one of those cool radios.
Here are few pictures showing the work I have done.
